Usain Bolt sets Olympic record, defends gold in 100 meters
The most impressive field in the history of the 100 meters saw the most impressive sprinter in the history of the world win it again.
Jamaica's Usain Bolt lived up to his name, hype, reputation and expectation Sunday night as he ran the second-fastest 100-meter dash in the history of the world, an Olympic-record 9.63 seconds to give him the gold.
It's the second straight gold for Bolt in this event, and by winning he becomes the only other man aside from Carl Lewis to defend the title of Fastest Man in the World at back-to-back Olympics.
Bolt's Jamaican teammate and rival, Yohan Blake, who was the defending world champion in the 100 (he won it at the World Championships in 2011, when Bolt was disqualified for a false start), took silver. Blake crossed in 9.75 seconds. That's blazing for anyone not named "Bolt." American Justin Gatlin -- who had the best 100 time in the semifinals of any sprinter -- was awarded bronze thanks to his 9.79 dart.It's the second straight gold for Bolt in this event, and by winning he becomes the only other man aside from Carl Lewis to defend the title of Fastest Man in the World at back-to-back Olympics.
The other two Americans in the race -- Tyson Gay and RyanBailey -- were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Bolt's gold may come as exciting-but-expected news to casual track fans, but the truth is, he was hampered by injuries and inconsistency the past two years. Basically, he wasn't running or acting like himself. That is: he wasn't completely dominant and removed from the rest of the field in his runs. He also wasn't the loose, confident, cocky figure the world grew to knew at those legendary '08 Games.
But in London, it all returned for Bolt, who ran in lane 7 Sunday night. He playfully showed for the cameras before his race by dancing, spinning air turntables and twiddling his signature two fingers, like a runner galloping down a track. He then signaled the cross, gave a kiss-and-point to the sky, and lined up in his block.
Bolt didn't have the best start -- which has always been a "problem" for him -- but by the 60-meter mark, the fastest sprinter in world history peeled from the pack to secure himself for first place.
This 100-meter final field was special. Consider: all eight sprinters had torched the race in less than 10 seconds this year. That is unprecedented. And sprinters who finished fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh in this final did it in faster times in those spots than any previous race in history.
And yet, Bolt beat them all so comfortably. Bolt told the BBC after the race that he was worried about a false start, like his from the World Championships last year. That of course wasn't a problem, as Bolt is once again a champion and still one of the most popular sports stars in the world.
Branden Grace on Tiger Woods: 'Nicest guy I've ever played with'
There have been plenty of words spoken about Tiger Woods over the years, some good, some bad, but few in the same category as what his playing partner said on Saturday at Firestone Country Club.
Branden Grace, a 24-year-old South African, was paired with Woods for the first two days and after both players shot a total of 142 through the first two rounds, found themselves paired together again on Saturday. Grace called playing with Woods "a dream come true" but it was what he said about Tiger as a person that might have been the most surprising statement of the week coming out of the Bridgestone.
The nicest guy he's EVER played with?! I mean, Tiger is without a doubt one of the top three golfers to ever live. He's intimidating. He's exact. He's focused and measured and keeps to himself, but to say he's the nicest guy this dude has ever played with is an incredible, incredible statement.
Maybe Tiger really liked the guy, and enjoyed playing with him during a stretch of golf that hasn't been Tiger's best. Maybe Grace understands The Rules of Woods, that simply state, "thou that remarks poorly of the Tiger is never allowed in thy circle again." Whatever the circumstance, I'm pretty sure I've never heard a person compliment Tiger on being a super nice guy (I read that entire Hank Haney book and if the word "nice" is in there once, it sure wasn't about his former employer).

London 2012 Badminton: Saina Nehwal gets Bronze as Xin Wang withdraws

Saina Nehwal etched her name in India's sporting history winning the country's maiden medal from badminton and becoming the second Indian woman to stand on the podium after China's Xin Wang retired hurt from the bronze medal play-off in the women's singles event at the London Games here Saturday.
However, the glamorous mixed doubles pair of Leander Paes and Sania Mirza went down 5-7, 6-7 (7-5) in the quarter finals against the top seeded Belarusian pair of Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi to bring to an end India's fruitless tennis campaign.

Marksman Gagan Narang had put India on the medals tally by claiming the bronze in men's 10m air rifle Monday before fellow shooter Vijay Kumar bolstered the nation's position garnering a silver in 25m rapid fire pistol Friday.
India had collected three medals (1 gold and two bronze) in the Beijing Games also four years back.
In the ring, L. Devendro Singh became the second Indian boxer to enter the quarterfinals bringing some relief following last night's heartbreak when Vikas Krishan had to bow out from the pre-quarters hours after the authorities overturned the result of the men's 69 kg bout which featured the Indian against American Errol Spence.
Hours after Vikas was declared the winner of the bout 13-11, the competition jury of AIBA ruled on an American protest Friday night that Vikas committed nine holding fouls in the third and last round alone and also that the Indian had intentionally spit out his mouth guard in the second round.
In the badminton bronze-medal play-off, though fourth seed Saina took off well with exquisite defensive shots in the first game, the Chinese recuperated in no time to equalise at 5-all.
From thereon it was a Wang-dominated game all the way and the Indian could not match her pace making many errors. She made several poor line judgements conceding at least four points to the World No.2.
Wang, a former World No.1, constantly caught Saina on the backfoot and the Hyderabadi, looking nervous, could not pick her cross-court smashes nor her drops at the net.
However, Saina tried fighting back at the end of the first game after Wang reached game point (20-14). The Commonwealth Games gold medallist saved four game points to make it 18-20.
But a match point away, the Chinese made a heavy landing, while hitting a smash, and fell on the floor writhing in pain.
The referee called for medical time-out. The tournament doctor came in and tended to her knee. The World No.2 returned to the court with a heavily strapped right knee. Surprisingly, she immediately sealed the game smashing Saina's serve.
But despite winning the first point in the second game, she again dropped on the court in pain.
Saina went to comfort Wang, who had no choice but to retire as she could not carry on.
The match was awarded to Saina, who hugged her opponent becoming India's second woman to win an Olympic Medal after weightlifter Karnam Malleswari at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Sania's mentor and national coach Pullela Gopichand said she would have won anyway if the match had gone on in spite of her loss in the first game.
"It was unfortunate that Wang had to retire. I feel that Saina would have won anyway if the match would have gone on," said Gopichand.
"It is a great victory and this is huge for Indian badminton. Saina was shocked when she lost the first game. Nevertheless a win is a win," added Gopi Chand.
Boxer Devendro beat Mongolian Serdamba Purevdorj 16-11 in a men's pre-quarterfinal match of the 49-kg category at the ExCel Arena.
Beijing Games bronze medallist Vijender Singh has also booked his place in the last eight.
There was a disappointing news from track and field, where S Sudha finished 13th in heat 1 of the women's 3,000-metre steeplechase thus ending her participation in the Games. The Indian runner clocked 9:48.86.
At the Royal artillery Barrack range, Indian female trap shooter Shagun Chowdhury looked lackluster to take the 20th placed in the qualification round and miss out on a final berth.
Shagun had a good 23 in the first round, but did miserably in the next two managing 17 and 21 to total 61.
In rowing, the team of Sandeep Kumar and Manjeet Singh got the 19th slot in the men's lightweight double sculls by competing the race in seven minutes and 8.39 seconds at the Eton Dorney lake.

Bolt struts into Games on "gold rush" day

LONDON, Aug 4 (Reuters) - The world's fastest man Usain Bolt burst into the Olympics on an action-packed "Super Saturday", cantering to victory in a qualifying race amid roars from a capacity 80,000 crowd at London's main stadium.
The towering Jamaican, the biggest draw of the Games, pointed to the sky as he soaked up the applause before winning his 100 metres heat in what looked like a comfortable stroll under bright sunshine, allaying doubts about his fitness.
Earlier on the eighth full day of competition, South African "blade runner" Oscar Pistorius made history as the first double amputee to compete at the Olympics in a 400 heat which he came through successfully.
The focus was firmly on the track and field after swimming dominated an opening week marked by enthusiastic crowds and the home nation racing up the medals table.
"Good Vibrations" by The Beach Boys blared at the athletics, summing up the mood as the middle weekend began.
In the pool, Michael Phelps has one last chance to add to the biggest Olympic medal haul of all time, while 25 medals in events ranging from tennis at Wimbledon to rowing near Windsor were being decided.
Phelps's heroics and Serena Williams demolishing Maria Sharapova 6-0 6-1 to win the women's singles tennis put the United States at the head of the overall medals ranking with 23 golds, overtaking China, on 22, for the first time.
Host nation Britain moved into third with two rowing golds, including the men's four "grudge match" against arch-rivals Australia that had an excited crowd of 30,000 on its feet.
In athletics, Bolt aims to repeat the heroics of Beijing in 2008 where he won three golds and lit up the world with his lightning bolt celebrations.
Also limbering up for Sunday's 100 final, the most prestigious event of the Games, were the three other fastest men in history - fellow Jamaicans Yohan Blake and Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay of the United States.
SMALL STUMBLE
In the men's 400 heats, Pistorius raised his arm aloft to acknowledge the warm reception. Born without a fibula in both legs, he fought for the right to line up against able-bodied competition, racing in his carbon fibre prosthetic blades.
"I was so nervous this morning," an elated Pistorius told reporters. "Thanks to everyone for showing their support. I didn't know whether to cry."
Bolt assured those concerned about his fitness with a first-round run of 10.09 seconds, although he stumbled slightly at the start before settling into his powerful stride.
"I made a bad step," the 25-year-old said. "I stumbled a bit. I'm glad it happened now."
Former world champion Kim Collins failed to appear in his heat, however, having vowed never to run for St Kitts & Nevis again following an apparent fallout with his country's Olympics officials.
Home favourite Jessica Ennis, the poster girl of the London Olympics, kept up her pursuit of gold in the heptathlon by extending her overnight lead after the long jump and javelin.
With her every move met by deafening cheers, the 26-year-old has one discipline to go - the 800.
But where there were thrills there were also spills as American defending men's 400 champion LaShawn Merritt, the fastest in the world this year with 44.12 seconds, pulled up injured in his qualifying heat.
Later on Saturday the women sprinters do battle in the 100 final with American Carmelita Jeter favourite, but defending champion Shelly-Ann Fraser and her fellow Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown will be out to keep the title in the Caribbean.
DOPING SUSPENSIONS
Away from the sporting action, Colombian 400 runner Diego Palomeque Echevarria was temporarily banned from the Games following a positive test for testosterone, the International Olympic Committee said.
Brazilian female rower Kissya Cataldo da Costa has also been expelled from the Olympics for failing a dope test for EPO prior to the start of the official Olympic period, a Brazilian rowing team official added.
The 18-year-old Colombian is the fourth athlete to have been officially suspended, provisionally or permanently, from the Games since the start of the Olympic period on July 16.
Ironically, the bans came on a big day for former prominent doping offenders Justin Gatlin and Dwain Chambers, who appeared in the athletics.
"I would clearly rather have that these competitors are not here," London Games chief Sebastian Coe told Reuters.
"The federation says they are eligible to compete, the IOC says they are eligible to compete so we give them as much courtesy as all the other athletes. The answer is that that is the world we live in."
PHELPS FAREWELL
The last night of swimming action sees Phelps join his American team mates in the 4x100 medley final as he looks for his 22nd Olympic medal before retiring.
Phelps, who this week smashed the previous record of 18 that Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina had held for nearly half a century, notched up number 21 on Friday with gold in the 100 butterfly.
On the water at Dorney Lake outside London, there were two British golds in 20 minutes including that of the men's four, billed as the race of the Olympic rowing competition.
The home crew recorded Britain's fourth consecutive win in the discipline and the host nation's medal tally on the course of nine makes it the most successful Olympic rowing regatta for the country in the modern era.
Joy was tempered, however, when the Danish boat of Mads Rasmussen and Rasmus Quist pipped the British defending champions in the lightweight double men's scull at the death.
Among the other medals decided on a hectic day was a thrilling women's triathlon that went down to a photo-finish, the first ever in the sport.
After just shy of two hours of racing, Swiss Nicola Spirig was judged to have beaten Lisa Norden of Sweden by 15 centimetres after a ferocious sprint finish in Hyde Park in central London.
Williams blew away Russian Sharapova in just 62 minutes on Wimbledon's Centre Court, completing the "golden slam" of all four majors and an Olympics singles title.

Serena Williams storms to singles gold
LONDON, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Serena Williams won her first Olympic tennis women's singles gold on Saturday with a 6-0 6-1 demolition of Russia's Maria Sharapova on Wimbledon's Centre Court.
The unstoppable American, who dropped just 16 games in her five singles matches en route to the final, has now completed the "golden slam" - winning all four majors as well as an Olympic singles gold.
She took just 62 minutes to wrap up her win over number three seed Sharapova, securing her victory with an ace.

It was a low-key series that was overshadowed by the Olympics, but it resulted in a dramatic change in the rankings as India climbed up to No. 2 after shutting out Sri Lanka 4-1. India seemed to have the final one-dayer in the bag after running up 294 and then reducing Sri Lanka to 102 for 5, but a spirited stand between the inexperienced Lahiru Thirimanne and Jeevan Mendis kept the visitors sweating till the end. Irfan Pathan more or less guaranteed the result in the 43rd over as he removed Mendis and Thisara Perera on his way to his second ODI five-for, capping a match in which he had already made an important contribution with the bat.

There were half-centuries for Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni as India ran up 294 in the final one-dayer at Pallekele, but the most significant innings in the dead rubber could be Manoj Tiwary's 65. For the second match in a row, he turned in a solid performance, strengthening his credentials for a hotly contested spot in the Indian middle-order, most likely at the expense of Rohit Sharma.
Rohit, given a remarkably long rope by the team management, flopped for the fifth game in a row; his tally of 13 runs in the series is the lowest by a specialist India batsman in a five-match series and the chorus for his axing is only going to get louder.
Tiwary's debut was famously delayed by a shoulder injury in 2007, and he has had seven ODIs in the five years since. A match-winning century in another dead rubber last December only led to a long spell on the bench, but a four-for with some part-time leg spin in the previous match and a steadying 110-run partnership with Gambhir should earn him a few matches in the upcoming New Zealand series at home.
Tiwary was most assured against the spinners, repeatedly reverse-paddling offspinner Sachithra Senanayake. He looked on course for his second one-day century as he confidently launched Senanayake over mid-off for two fours in an over, but he perished in the next over to a Lasith Malinga bouncer.
For the second time in three games, Malinga began an over in the batting Powerplay with two wickets in two balls, as the in-form Suresh Raina fell for a golden duck and India slid to 197 for 5. But, as in the third ODI, Irfan Pathan showed off his improved batting, and gave the specialist batsman enough of the strike to take apart the Sri Lanka bowling. That day it had been Raina, today it was Dhoni, who has had little to do in this series as players above him in the order have repeatedly done the job for the side. Dhoni began by carving Malinga for consecutive boundaries through cover and a typically busy innings, interspersed with boundaries, helped India take 75 off the final 10 overs.
While Dhoni piloted India at the end, Gambhir did it at the start. Even as Ajinkya Rahane failed to grab his chance, Virat Kohli had a rare failure and Rohit's horror run extended, Gambhir was unperturbed. Once again, he managed to score at almost a run a ball without seeming to play any big hits as he made his way to his third fifty-plus score of the series. The footwork, as usual, was nimble, allowing him to place the ball for singles as he coasted to his half-century. The one moment of concern was in the 12th over when he was struck on the glove by a short ball from Malinga, needing some attention from the physio.
He was closing in on his seventh ODI hundred against Sri Lanka before he was done in by the extra bounce from Senanayake. India's strategy of playing extra batsman paid off this time, but with Virender Sehwag out injured Sri Lanka will be looking to capitalise on whoever fills the fifth bowler's quota.

The 21-year-old British singer-songwriter teased the cameras while clad in a Marni jumpsuit with Dolce & Gabbana shades and a Jeremy Scott dress with Giuseppe Zanotti heels in stylish Simon Emmett shot spread lining the pages.
